Ultrasound that works below the surface
HIFU stands for High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound. The handpiece sends ultrasound energy to precise depths under the skin, heating small points in the deeper layers while leaving the surface untouched. The body responds by producing new collagen, and over the following weeks the tissue contracts and firms.
Because the energy is focused rather than spread, it reaches the layer that surgeons tighten during a facelift. That is why HIFU is described as a non-surgical facelift — and also why it is not the same thing as one. It firms and lifts mild to moderate laxity. Skin that has lost a lot of support will improve, but it will not be restored to where surgery would put it, and we will tell you that rather than take a booking.
Nothing breaks the skin, so there is no recovery period. Most people go straight back to work, and the changes appear gradually enough that nobody can point to the day you had something done.
What it helps with
- A softening jawlineEarly jowling and loss of definition along the jaw, the most common reason people book it.
- Sagging cheeksMid-face heaviness, where the cheek has begun to drift downwards.
- Loose neck skinCrepey texture and slackness under the chin and along the neck.
- Brow heavinessA subtle lift at the outer brow that opens the eye area.
- DécolletageCrepiness on the chest, which ages faster than the face because it is rarely protected.
- Overall firmnessSkin that looks tired and slack rather than lined, where tightening helps more than filling.
Not suitable if you have significant skin laxity that really needs surgery, an active skin infection or open wounds in the area, or if you are pregnant. Tell us about any implanted electrical device, metal implants or recent fillers in the area. We assess first, and if HIFU is the wrong tool for your face we will say so.
How it works
-
Assessment
We look at where the laxity actually sits and how much support the skin has lost, then decide whether HIFU will do enough to be worth your money.
-
Cleanse and map
Skin is cleansed and the treatment area is marked out in lines, so the energy is delivered evenly and nothing is missed or doubled.
-
Gel and cartridge depth
Ultrasound gel is applied and the cartridge depth chosen for the area — shallower for the neck and around the eyes, deeper along the jaw and cheek.
-
The ultrasound passes
The handpiece delivers energy line by line. You feel brief pricks of heat as each line goes in. It is tolerable rather than comfortable, and it passes quickly.
-
Soothe and sunscreen
Cooling afterwards, then moisturiser and sunscreen. Mild redness fades within a couple of hours and you can wear makeup the same day.
-
Collagen builds
Some tightening is visible immediately, but the real change comes from new collagen forming over the following weeks. The course is planned as two sessions.
Post-care instructions
There is very little to do, which is most of the appeal.
- Sunscreen every morning, reapplied if you are outdoors.
- No steam, sauna or very hot showers for 24 hours.
- Skip a hard workout on the day of treatment.
- Keep skincare simple for 48 hours — cleanser, moisturiser, sunscreen. No retinol or acids.
- Mild redness, warmth or tenderness to touch for a day or two is normal, and some people feel a dull ache for a week as collagen remodels.
- Anything unusual — blistering, numbness that does not settle, lasting pain — call the clinic.
What to expect: a little tightening straight away, then a gradual firming as collagen rebuilds over the following weeks. Results look natural and last several months. How long depends on your age, skin quality and how much sun you take.

HIFU FAQs
Does HIFU hurt?
You feel brief pricks of heat as each line of energy goes in, strongest over bony areas such as the jaw and forehead. Most people describe it as tolerable and are glad it is quick. Tell us if it is too much and we will adjust the settings.
How soon will I see results?
There is usually a little tightening straight away, but the real change is gradual, building over the following weeks as new collagen forms. Judge it at two to three months rather than the next morning.
How long do results last?
Several months. Age, skin quality and sun exposure all affect it, and skin continues to age in the meantime, so most people repeat it periodically rather than once.
How many sessions do I need?
The course is planned as two sessions. Whether you need more later depends on how much laxity you started with and how your skin responds.
Is it really a non-surgical facelift?
It reaches the same deep layer a facelift tightens, which is where the name comes from, but it is not equivalent to surgery. HIFU is for mild to moderate laxity. If your face needs a surgical lift, HIFU will disappoint you and we will say so.
Is there any downtime?
None to speak of. Mild redness settles within a couple of hours, makeup is fine the same day, and some people feel tender or achy for a few days while collagen remodels.
Can I have HIFU if I have fillers?
Tell us what you have had and when. Ultrasound energy can affect filler that sits in the treatment area, so timing and placement need to be planned rather than assumed.
Can I have it before a wedding or an event?
Yes, and it suits events well because there is nothing to hide afterwards. Book two to three months ahead, since that is when the collagen change shows.
